[FUEL] Create a Business that Works for You and that You Love

By Dawn Shuler You hear how you should do this and you should do that. Heck, as a business coach, even I tell you what to do! (And one note about that… I always follow any suggestion or recommendation with “You have to do what works for you.”) Models, formulas, strategies, tools, worksheets, and the like are fabulous for helping you navigate the waters of business, but they’re not meant to be so sacred that you can’t deviate from them and follow your heart’s wisdom. If you’re making decisions in your business that are based from your heart and passion for what you want in your business, then you are on your way to creating a business you love. But if you’re making decisions – or not taking action – out of fear or lack, then your business will probably not end up being one you love. How do you

[FUEL] Is it time to come out of your shell?

By Dawn Shuler Entrepreneurs and business owners often go through cycles. We can be all spitfire and balls o’ energy, and then we go into downtime, replenish, and retreat mode. We can’t be at high productivity and creativity all the time; we need the rest part of the creativity cycle. At the same time, we can’t be in rest mode all the time, or nothing gets done! And then there’s the in-between, the status quo, where we just keep doing what we’ve been doing, not adding anything new, and not really retreating into our shells. That place can feel reeeeaaaaalllly comfortable after a while, especially if revenues are steady. “Hey, I’m bringing in income. I’m working. It’s all good.” However, at some point, that status quo will start to change. Maybe clients aren’t renewing like they used to, and new ones aren’t coming in. Or you’re not getting as many

[FUEL] Creating Sacred Space – Both Inside and Out

By Dawn Shuler Much of what I do for my clients is to create sacred space. When I’m leading a workshop, I create sacred space for my clients and students to do their own creating. When I coach, the coaching session is a sacred space where my clients feel safe to share, to stretch, to take risks, and to uncover blocks to their creativity, and business growth. Sacred space is one of my core values, along with connection and authenticity. I not only create sacred space for others, but it’s crucial for me to have to do all that I do. And I suspect it’s important to you, too. Sacred space doesn’t just occur in one’s physical environment, but also mentally. My outward sacred space helps to create the internal sacred space I need as well. Here is how I create sacred space… both externally and internally. Figure out what

FUEL] What to do when things don’t seem to be going well

By Dawn Shuler We all have those times when we are in the zone, when it’s all going well. We score the big client. We fill our programs. We get amazing feedback from an article we wrote that tells us we’re on the right path. The kids are good, the team won, the tea shop has your favorite tea in, and all the traffic lights are green. Life is damn good. And then there are the days where it doesn’t go quite so well. You get letters from the IRS regarding an issue that you’ve been corresponding with them for months, and when you call, their system is down. (And this is after waiting on hold for 30 minutes.) Your kid is sick. The thunderstorm caused the electricity to go out, and you lost all your changes. The marketing call you make falls flat. The hot “yes” for your program

[FUEL] 9 Pieces You Need for a Successful Business

By Dawn Shuler According to an article in Forbes in 2013, there were almost 28 million small businesses in the United States, and over 22 million of those were self-employed with no additional payroll or employees.  Over 50% of the working population (that’s about 120 million people) works in a small business.  And the last statistic for now: small businesses have generated over 65% of the net new jobs since 1995. So, seems like a small business is the way to go, huh? Well, you need a little more than the proverbial shingle.  As I coach and consult with small business owners in creating successful businesses, we cover several areas of business: administrative, list-building, lead generation, marketing, creation and development, training, revenue generation, credibility and visibility, and financial tracking. It occurred to me that that the big graphic can be broken down into more manageable pieces: the pieces you need
