[FUEL] Let go, let go, let go

By Dawn Shuler Whether it’s physical stuff, relationships, or old beliefs, sometimes it seems as if our lives are a repetitive process of let go of this, let go of that, let go of this other thing. It’s actually not a repeat of the same thing. It’s a peeling back of the layers of the onion. Each time you peel back one layer, reach one level of the game, there’s another level, another layer to conquer. Remember those racing video games in arcades? You do the dirt bike race, and you win! Yay! Then, the next course is in the Alps, and you come in second. Yay for you! Now onto the next course… And so it goes. You see the course in front of you, but that particular finish line is all you see. You don’t see the next course with its finish line flag, and the one after

What stories do you tell yourself?

By Dawn Shuler Two weeks ago, I was an unexpected featured member at one of my beloved On Purpose Networking groups.  Ginny, leader of OPN, had had a cancellation at the last minute, and she asked me if I could fill in.  I said sure. Now, this was about 30 minutes before I was planning to leave, so I obviously hadn’t had time to plan what I would talk about for 5 minutes and promote. I put together some ideas about how I see clearly what my clients need, how to get there, and what to do.  Since we also do door prizes, I brought my book Find Your Moments as one of the offerings. I walked into the event and handed my book to the assistant Jill.  She looked at the cover, looked at me, and then exclaimed, “I didn’t know you had written a book! Oh my goodness!”

[FUEL] Peace, Commitment, and Empowerment

By Dawn Shuler These three words have come up over and over for me this week, and while they may seem like individual and distinct concepts, they are intertwined with each other as well as to me and my business. Let’s start with peace. When I think about my top values, peace or peaceful has never reared its head. It’s not that I didn’t want to feel peaceful; it’s just never felt crucial. Lately, though, especially in the early morning when I have some me time, I’ve noticed this wonderful feeling in my body, in my core. I breathe better, bigger, fuller, deeper. I put a name to this feeling, and I found it was “peace.” I realized I had been missing that feeling. Sure, life has been hectic, and there’s a lot going on, but I was surprised to realize how important peace was needed. Onto commitment. I’m searching

By Dawn Shuler If you know me at all, you know how important connection is to me.  I see connection (and the possibility of connection) everywhere: in relationships, in networking, in business, in stories, in movies, in spirituality… you name it; there’s probably the potential of connection in some form or another. I love almost everything Copyblogger puts out, and this particular infographic is no exception.  Demian Farmworth put together this fabulous infographic on the anatomy of how businesses can tell their compelling story: the Hero, the Goal, the Conflict, the Mentor, and the Moral.  You don’t want to miss this, or all the links to other great Copyblogger content, or the extra marketing tips at the end.   Like this infographic? Being poor, not enough clothes, and the emergence of a system

By Dawn Shuler Growing up, I lived in the worst part of Irving, Texas.  Before I could drive, I babysat for my biology teacher and his family, and as he brought me home for the first time, he remarked, “I didn’t even know there were houses back here.” I was beyond embarrassed and shamed.  I knew exactly what he meant and what he was too kind to say. It was what you might picture of a white trash neighborhood:  rusted out junk cars all over the yards, trash piling up on porches and spilling out in the yard, dogs and goats (yes, goats) wandering around.  To be fair, there were a couple of houses that were nicely kept up, but they were an exception. My parents did their best as well: keeping the house painted when it started to peel, planting marigolds in the front yard, keeping the grass mowed,

Come to the light – OUT. You are already in the light – IN.

By Dawn Shuler I’ve noticed over the years that there is a strong marketing propensity to inspire fear in others.  It goes something like this: You are struggling.  You are challenged by your situation.  And if you don’t fix it, you will continue to struggle and wither.  You are in darkness. Let me show you this pinpoint of light in your dark cave.  I am the light, and only I can lead you successfully out of the dark. As a coach and as a business owner who markets her business, I have a hard time with this avenue.  I actually don’t want to work with someone who is so mired in struggle and challenge that she’s desperate for any relief and will grab onto anything that might give that relief. My clients are already in the light.  Sure, there may be some challenges to overcome (hey, don’t we all have

Are your actions in alignment?

By Dawn Shuler A few weeks ago, I was feeling very low energy, which was unfortunate timing as I had tons to do on my plate: networking, marketing, planning the next marketing campaign. And I didn’t want to do any of it. So, I didn’t. I had just come off several weeks of working hard on my rebrand and new website launch, plus several speaking gigs, and potential client meetings (yay on all of the above). So, I knew my low energy could have just been a natural part of the creative cycle – the downtime part of the cycle. But I was worried that I was making easy excuses to NOT do work. Was I in alignment with my energy, or was I in fear? Fear over putting myself and my new brand out there and possible rejection? I don’t know that I had an answer to that question.

[FUEL] Create a Business that Works for You and that You Love

By Dawn Shuler You hear how you should do this and you should do that. Heck, as a business coach, even I tell you what to do! (And one note about that… I always follow any suggestion or recommendation with “You have to do what works for you.”) Models, formulas, strategies, tools, worksheets, and the like are fabulous for helping you navigate the waters of business, but they’re not meant to be so sacred that you can’t deviate from them and follow your heart’s wisdom. If you’re making decisions in your business that are based from your heart and passion for what you want in your business, then you are on your way to creating a business you love. But if you’re making decisions – or not taking action – out of fear or lack, then your business will probably not end up being one you love. How do you
